A NOTE: Freezing the grapes beforehand is a nice touch, as it helps to keep the drink chilled.

Maibowle

Serves 2

Maibowle, which is sometimes called "May wine," is one of those traditional combinations (in this case, I believe Germanic) that every family has a personal spin on, one for which you could (if you were very intrepid about following leads and talking to small-town folks) find many, many variations. I mean, it is "May wine," a phrase that conjures up all manner of spring suggestions. In this version, I like using strawberries. But other versions use peaches, pineapple, or even woodruff or wild baby's breath. The last one sounds like it might have you dancing among the fairy stones, but maybe that's what spring's about. You also may see this made as a punch, but I believe taking the Maibowle to cocktail status displays reverence for the season.
